This book contains two collections of mostly short, untitled poems, and a long blank verse on sleep. My intention with the poem on sleep was to imagine a small book of poeticisms drawn from a usually pleasant subject. The concept came from Keats.

"On Sleep, &c" by Joseph HartThis book contains three distinct parts. First, it consists of two separate collections of short, untitled poems, and then a long (20 pages) blank verse on sleep. The long poem on sleep seems to be an extension, of sorts, of the shorter poems. All are so rich with imagery of sleep, death and the sea, which seem to be Mr. Hart's favorite topics, and he blends all three so seamlessly that the reader often feels set adrift among them.
I write this review with much trepidation. I am somewhat fearful of not doing the book justice. I don't really think any review possibly could. I have never come across a collection quite like this one. It is unique is its format and should not be entered into lightly. It is not a casual read, and its poems are profound, dense, thoughtful and deep. The poet has bared his soul for all to see, and if I am to be quite honest in my review, I would have to say that these poems seem so terribly important and profound in a way that seems beyond my complete comprehension. This is not to say I dislike the poetry within. Rather, I am astounded by its beauty and its depth. The reader will behold poems that are, paradoxically, at once simple, yet incredibly complex.
The poet is greatly influenced by Keats, and the blank verse on sleep calls to mind Keats' "Endymion". The last time I reacted to poetry this way was when I read (or attempted to read) "Endymion". It is poetry to be savored, returned to and discovered anew with each reading. It is truly beautiful and timeless, and will therefore prove to be "a joy for ever".
